Amer Ghalib, the mayor of Hamtramck, Michigan the only US city with an all-Muslim government has endorsed former President Donald Trump for the upcoming November election. Despite some policy disagreements, Ghalib described Trump as a “man of principles” and the “right choice” for the country.
In a Facebook post, Ghalib said, “Though we may not agree on everything, I believe Trump is the leader needed in these critical times.” He expressed confidence in his decision regardless of the election’s outcome, adding, “I’m ready to face the consequences.”
Ghalib’s endorsement follows a recent meeting with Trump, where they discussed Arab and Muslim American concerns. Trump shared Ghalib’s endorsement on his Truth Social platform shortly after.
Hamtramck, with a population of 28,000, made history in 2021 as the first US city to elect an all-Muslim city council and mayor. Ghalib, originally from Yemen, moved to the US at age 17.
Michigan is a key battleground state for the 2024 election. In recent polls, Vice President Kamala Harris holds a slight lead over Trump, with Muslim-American voters showing decreased support for Democrats due to US policies regarding Israel’s war in Gaza.
