Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced a state-level criminal investigation into the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Routh, aged 58, was arrested after being found on Trump’s golf course in Palm Beach with a loaded SKS-style rifle. He had been camping on-site for nearly 12 hours before Secret Service agents thwarted the potential attack. Routh fled the scene, leaving behind a backpack, rifle, and other items, but was captured in a neighboring county.

Federal prosecutors have charged Routh with illegally possessing a firearm, given his prior felony convictions, and possessing a gun with an obliterated serial number. More charges may follow as investigations continue.
