Chinese Troops Join Brazil’s Military Drills Alongside US Forces For First Time

For the first time, Chinese troops will take part in Brazil’s annual military exercises, “Operation Formosa,” alongside U.S. forces. The Brazilian Navy, which coordinates the drills, confirmed on Tuesday that Chinese forces will be involved in this year’s event. While U.S. and Chinese troops will both be present, they will not train together, the Pentagon clarified.

Details of the Exercises
Operation Formosa is one of Brazil’s largest military drills, involving around 3,000 Brazilian troops. The exercises, which take place near Formosa, approximately 80 km northeast of Brasilia, will last for three days and include a range of military assets such as aircraft, tanks, artillery, and rocket launchers. Live ammunition will also be used.

China’s Involvement
In 2023, China only sent observers to the military drills, but this year, they will have a more active role with ground troops. The Brazilian Navy’s statement highlighted that this is the first time Chinese military personnel will be part of the operation, alongside troops from the U.S.

U.S. Pentagon Response
Pentagon spokesperson Major Pete Nguyen emphasized that U.S. forces will only train with their Brazilian counterparts, despite the presence of Chinese troops. “By working side-by-side with our Brazilian counterparts, we are enhancing our collective ability to respond to regional security challenges,” he said.

International Presence
In addition to the U.S. and China, observers from eight other countries, including Argentina, France, Italy, Pakistan, and South Africa, will attend. These international military personnel will engage in workshops to exchange experiences.
