China Discovers New Tick-Borne Virus: Wetland Virus May Impact Brain Health

China has discovered a new tick-borne virus known as the Wetland Virus (WELV), which could pose significant risks to brain health. Initially detected in 2019, this virus has been found to cause neurological diseases with symptoms including fever, headache, and vomiting. WELV belongs to the orthonairovirus family, which is also responsible for serious illnesses like Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever. Researchers have identified the virus in ticks and animals in northern China, particularly in species like the Transbaikal zokor.

Alarmingly, 17 patients in China have already tested positive for the virus, presenting with non-specific symptoms such as dizziness, muscle pain, and even localized lymphadenopathy. Some severe cases led to a coma due to high white blood cell counts affecting the brain and spinal fluid. While all patients recovered, lab experiments showed that WELV could cause lethal infections, particularly impacting the central nervous system.

Ongoing research suggests that while WELV might cause mild symptoms in some cases, it has the potential to lead to severe health complications, emphasizing the need for vigilance.
