Biden To Visit Africa In October, Stops In Germany And Angola

President Joe Biden will make his long-promised visit to Africa this October, with scheduled stops in Germany and Angola, the White House confirmed. This visit, from October 10-15, fulfills a commitment made during the 2022 U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, where Biden vowed to visit the continent the following year.

Strengthening Alliances in Germany

Before heading to Africa, Biden will first stop in Germany. During his visit to Berlin, Biden will meet with German leaders to strengthen ties and express gratitude for Germany’s continued support of Ukraine amid Russian aggression. The discussion will also highlight Germany’s role in hosting U.S. troops and contributing to NATO efforts.

Focus on Economic Partnerships in Angola

From October 13-15, Biden will be in Luanda, Angola’s capital, to meet with President João Lourenço. Their talks will center around economic collaborations and significant infrastructure initiatives, including a major rail project connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Indian Ocean. This project aligns with Biden’s vision of enhancing U.S. partnerships across Africa, a key area of interest as China’s influence on the continent grows.

A First Since 2015

Biden’s trip will mark the first time a U.S. president has visited sub-Saharan Africa since 2015, reaffirming the importance of strong U.S.-Africa relations. This visit is a continuation of the administration’s efforts to engage with African nations, following high-profile trips by Vice President Kamala Harris and First Lady Jill Biden in 2023.

Looking Ahead

With only a few months left in his term, Biden’s Africa visit will be a significant moment for U.S. foreign policy, focusing on economic growth, infrastructure development, and geopolitical alliances. As the president prepares for this trip, anticipation is building for the outcomes of these high-level discussions.
