The countdown to the FIFA World Cup 2026 has begun. Tickets for the tournament officially went on sale on Wednesday, sparking excitement among soccer fans worldwide.
Not even half of the 48-team field has been confirmed. The full schedule won’t be ready until December. Still, millions of fans showed they don’t mind waiting. Their only priority is securing tickets.
According to FIFA, 4.5 million fans applied in a ticket lottery last month. The selected winners are now being notified by email to purchase their tickets during the first sales phase.
“These are not only outstanding figures, but also a strong statement,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said. “The whole world wants to be part of the FIFA World Cup 26, the biggest, most inclusive, and most exciting event ever. From Canada, Mexico, and the United States, to countries big and small across every continent, fans are proving once again that passion for football truly unites.”
FIFA has divided tickets into four categories. Category 1 offers the best seats, while Category 4 includes upper-level spots in stadiums.
Prices start at $60 for group-stage matches and go up to $6,730 for the final. But this year, FIFA will introduce dynamic pricing, meaning ticket prices may increase based on demand.
For fans who do not want to spend big, there are alternative ways to get tickets through promotions and loyalty programs.
American Airlines has announced that AAdvantage loyalty members can redeem miles for World Cup tickets. The rollout begins October 13 for executive platinum and concierge key members. Platinum, gold, and other tiers will get access on October 14 and 15.
Meanwhile, Verizon customers will also get a chance to secure tickets for free. The telecom company, an official World Cup sponsor, will give away tickets and perks through its app starting Thursday.
Soccer legend David Beckham, who is part of Verizon’s promotion, said:
“For me, there are few things as exciting as experiencing football live, whether that’s on or off the pitch, and so I am proud to partner with Verizon to celebrate their plans to give fans unprecedented access to the tournament.”
Despite the ticket sales opening, major details remain unclear. Fans still don’t know where or when their teams will play. The final schedule will only be decided after the group-stage draw on December 5.
There are also travel questions. Many fans outside North America will need visas to visit the United States, especially as the country enforces stricter immigration rules.
Even with these uncertainties, fans are eager. Millions have already committed to being part of soccer’s biggest event.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be the largest in history, featuring 48 teams across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. With unprecedented demand already on display, ticket sales are expected to break records.
Soccer fans know one thing for sure — this will be an event they don’t want to miss.
