Pune's experienced rally driver Sanjay Takale put up a creditable show in the 30th annual Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR), guiding Team Toyota to a total second position in the event in the face of initial adversity. The rally, referred to as the "Asian Dakar," pushed drivers through Southeast Asia's toughest terrain for over 3,300 km from August 8–16.

Takale encountered a dramatic setback on Day 2 when his vehicle crashed into a deep ditch at top speed, producing a tyre burst and a huge puncture. It got worse when one of the wheel nuts fractured during its replacement, losing Takale and his Thai navigator Keerati Noijard over two hours. Forced to abandon the leg, the two earned a nine-hour penalty, leaving them at the tail end of the leaderboard.

Dramatic Fightback Grabs Second Spot

Instead of giving up, Takale fought back in a determined way over the subsequent stages. His determination and accurate driving allowed him to slowly move up the order, eventually securing a good finish for Team Toyota. As an award for this great fightback, Takale received a Special Trophy, appreciating his perseverance and sportsmanship.

"The special award was awarded for my fightback performance, and to hear schoolchildren chant my name during the prize giving ceremony was special," Takale said from Pattaya. "I am proud that my performance ensured Team Toyota finished second in one of the toughest rallies in Asia."

Takale's sportsman spirit was witnessed beyond his own competition. On Day 5, he paused mid-stage to help a Team Toyota teammate whose vehicle was stuck in a swamp. With his winch, he got the vehicle out, spending more than an hour of his own time to let both cars continue in the rally.

A Continuing Motorsport Legacy

The AXCR 2025 was another milestone in the glorious career of Takale. The 2011 AXCR titleholder and 2012 APRC Asia-Pacific Rally Champion has participated in more than 48 rallies across the globe, with 42 podiums to his credit. He also became the first Indian to finish the iconic Dakar Rally (Classic Category) in a vehicle.

With his talent, perseverance, and great sportsmanship, Sanjay Takale again solidified himself as one of India's best rally drivers, inspiring enthusiasts and wannabe drivers alike.
