Rohit Sharma faces uncertainty as BCCI reviews his ODI captaincy after Asia Cup.
India’s ODI cricket captain Rohit Sharma is likely to face a big decision about his future with the national team. According to reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will hold key talks with Rohit after the Asia Cup 2025. The meeting could shape India’s leadership plans in the 50-over format.
Rohit, 38, has already retired from Test cricket and T20Is. He continues to lead the ODI team, but India has not played a single ODI since the Champions Trophy final in March 2025. His next assignment will come in October when India tours Australia for a three-match ODI series.
The ODI series against Bangladesh in August was cancelled. This means Rohit has not played international cricket for months, raising questions about his form and fitness. By the time the 2027 ODI World Cup takes place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, Rohit will be over 40. This has created doubts over whether he should continue as India’s ODI captain.

Reports suggest that the BCCI will sit with Rohit after the Asia Cup ends on September 28. The meeting is expected to happen in October. The board wants to discuss India’s ODI strategy and plans before the Australia tour.
Earlier, a Dainik Jagran report claimed both Rohit and Virat Kohli could be asked to step away from ODIs after the Australia series. Another report in the same newspaper stated that Shreyas Iyer is the frontrunner to replace Rohit as captain.
A BCCI source told the media that the board wants Shreyas Iyer to lead India in ODIs till the 2027 World Cup. The source added that Shubman Gill will not get this role because he is already India’s Test captain and the vice-captain in T20Is.
Gill is expected to take over T20I captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav after the 2026 T20 World Cup. For now, the BCCI sees Iyer as the best option to lead the ODI team.

Meanwhile, reports from RevSportz suggest Rohit may feature in the unofficial India ‘A’ vs Australia ‘A’ ODI series in Kanpur in September-October. This series could help him regain match practice before the senior team’s Australia tour.
Currently, Rohit is training in Mumbai with former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar. This preparation shows that he is still serious about playing, but the final call on his captaincy will come after the BCCI meeting.
India has won a lot of matches under Rohit Sharma's leadership, but this ODI future is now in doubt. Whether he stays captain or is replaced by Shreyas Iyer will be determined by the October discussions with the BCCI.
