India’s Test batting has looked unsettled since the absence of Cheteshwar Pujara. The former No. 3 was the backbone of the batting order, scoring 6,529 runs in that position. Since then, the team has tried youngsters like Karun Nair and Sai Sudharsan. But none of them have cemented their place so far.
With the domestic season beginning, the Duleep Trophy 2025 is already giving selectors a few names to watch out for. And one of them is Vidarbha batter Danish Malewar.
Playing for the Central Zone against the North East Zone, Malewar scored a fine century. While critics may say the opposition lacked quality, runs at this level are still valuable. For Malewar, this could be the first step before bigger challenges.
The innings have raised hopes that he could be India’s next solid No. 3 option. But for now, it is too early to call.
Malewar initially gained notoriety during the 2024 Ranji Trophy season. He played nine games in his first season and amassed 783 runs at a remarkable average of 52. There were two hundred and six fifties in his total.
What stood out was his patience. His strike rate of 51 showed he builds his innings like Pujara and Rahul Dravid once did.

One of his centuries came against Gujarat, which had quality bowlers like Arzan Nagwaswalla and Tejas Patel. The other came against Kerala, the finalists, where he scored 153 and 73 in a winning effort. That attack included Eden Apple Tom, MD, Nidheesh, and the experienced Jalaj Saxena.
India has long relied on dependable batters at No. 3. First, it was Rahul Dravid. Then Pujara carried the legacy forward. Now, the spot is wide open.
Malewar is a possible successor because of his composed and stable demeanor. His ability to grind bowlers down, which is uncommon in modern cricket, is what sets him apart despite his consistent numbers.

Throughout the current Duleep Trophy and the forthcoming Ranji season, selectors will be keeping a close eye on him. He might get closer to earning the India cap with a strong run.
While the ton against the North East Zone might not be the toughest challenge, Danish Malewar is still making a statement. He has the technique, temperament, and track record to rise higher.
As the Ranji Trophy unfolds, his performances could decide if he is truly the answer to India’s long-standing search for a reliable No. 3.
