In a remarkable testament to a mother’s unwavering love and resilience and of course to the skill sets of a team of doctors 66-year- old Shimla Bai has saved her son’s life for the second time in a decade.
This story of an extraordinary dual organ donation is a one of its kind recorded globally. A decade ago in 2015, Vi- jay, now 28-year-old, was diagnosed with a critical liver condition that re- quired an urgent trans- plant. His mother donated a part of her liver and the transplant at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sci- ences (ILBS) in Delhi was successful.
The son led a healthy life for the next 10 years. In a twist of fate, he later developed an end-stage kidney failure which re- quired regular dialysis. Once again, the mother stepped forward this time as a kidney donor.
Despite her medical his- tory of having undergone a major abdominal surgery, she was found medically fit and the most suitable donor. The renal transplant team at ILBS, led by Dr. Abhiyutthan Singh Jadaon, performed a complex laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, managing technical challenges associated with her prior liver surgery.
The recipient’s kidney transplant was carried out by a team of expert nephrologists under the leadership of Dr. R. P. Mathur. The team successfully navigated difficult immunological challenges, including rejection antibodies resulting from the previous liver transplant.
Following successful transplant, both the son and his mother were discharged from the hospital after a 10-day recovery period. The case is being hailed as a medical milestone and an example of parental sacrifice.
The ILBS team described the case as a beacon of medical excellence and human spirit, emphasising that such stories serve to inspire both the medical community and the public.
