Renowned Manipuri guitarist and Western music pioneer Chongtham Vikram Singh, 54, died after being allegedly assaulted by a group of people near his residence in Kilokari village, southeast Delhi, police said on Monday.
A PCR call reporting the beating was received at Sunlight Colony Police Station on September 7 and marked for action. Preliminary inquiries indicated that Vikram, a retired musician and music teacher, had objected to alleged shouting and nuisance caused by delivery boys and dhaba staff outside his home.
He went downstairs to confront the disturbance and was allegedly attacked with fists and blows. His son, Yaiphaba, took him to Holy Family Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Reports place the incident late Sunday night or in the early hours of Monday, around 11:30 pm to midnight. Family accounts described ongoing disturbance from youths allegedly gathering while intoxicated.
Some sources said that six suspects, including a minor, were detained or apprehended. An FIR has been registered, and a post-mortem is being conducted at AIIMS. Delhi Police stated that investigation into the circumstances and motive is underway, with necessary legal action being taken as per law. Further facts will emerge from the probe.
Vikram was a prominent figure in Manipur’s Western music scene. He played guitar with bands including Ultra Vires, Phoenix and Eastern Dark. He was the eldest son of renowned Manipuri singer Chongtham Kamala. One report also linked him to the Delhi-based jazz-rock band Fubar Ghetto.
The North East Students’ Society, Delhi University (NESSDU), condemned the alleged assault and demanded a swift and impartial investigation. Members of the Northeast community and civil society organisations gathered at Sunlight Colony Police Station seeking identification of those responsible and legal action.
Some community members alleged possible racial targeting. Police have not established any such motive.
