For the first time in recent years, Srinagar’s Lal Chowk in Jammu and Kashmir became the focal point of New Year celebrations, organized by the Department of Tourism. The iconic Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower area) hosted a musical event, drawing large crowds who enthusiastically welcomed the New Year. The atmosphere at Lal Chowk was filled with joy and excitement as hundreds of locals and tourists gathered to groove to the music, marking a unique and festive celebration.

Local and Tourist Reactions Attendees expressed delight at the unprecedented New Year celebrations in Lal Chowk. Mohammad Yasin, a local resident, shared his happiness about witnessing such festivities for the first time at Lal Chowk. Tourists visiting the Kashmir Valley also expressed surprise and excitement at the vibrant celebrations in Srinagar.

Organized Musical Event The Tourism Department’s musical event added to the celebratory atmosphere, with locals and tourists participating in the festivities. Lal Chowk, traditionally a significant area in Srinagar, witnessed a transformation with decorations and lively activities, creating an atmosphere described as never seen before.

Srinagar Municipal Commissioner’s Perspective Srinagar Municipal Corporation Commissioner and CEO of Srinagar Smart City Ltd., Athar Aamir Khan, described the occasion as a remarkable transformation for the city. In a post on X, he highlighted the vibrancy and celebration at Srinagar Square, Lal Chowk, attributing the success to the implementation of Srinagar Smart City projects.

Previous New Year’s Eve Celebrations On New Year’s Eve, Lal Chowk had already come alive with people dancing and singing as they welcomed the arrival of 2024. The festive spirit extended beyond Srinagar, with Gulmarg town in Baramulla district hosting New Year’s Eve celebrations featuring laser shows and dance performances.

Nationwide New Year Celebrations While Srinagar embraced a unique celebration, other cities across the country joined in the New Year festivities with lavish celebrations and joyous gatherings, welcoming the beginning of 2024.
