Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after inaugurating India’s inaugural underwater metro train in Kolkata, West Bengal, engaged with school students during a journey on the groundbreaking metro. Accompanied by West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar and state LoP and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari, PM Modi interacted with the students and metro staff on this historic occasion. Welcomed by a large crowd with chants of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Modi Modi’ at Esplanade metro station, PM Modi’s visit marked the inauguration of multiple connectivity projects worth Rs 15,400 crores and India’s first under-river metro tunnel.
The Kolkata Metro extension, featuring the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade Metro section, includes the country’s first transportation tunnel passing under a major river, showcasing technological prowess and strategic significance in connecting key areas of Kolkata. PM Modi also inaugurated the Kavi Subhash – Hemanta Mukhopadhyay Metro section and the Taratala – Majerhat Metro section, emphasizing innovative approaches to urban mobility.
The inauguration extended beyond Kolkata, with PM Modi flagging off crucial projects nationwide, including Pune Metro’s Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi stretch, Kochi Metro Rail Phase I Extension, Agra Metro’s Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar, Pune Metro, and Esplanade Metro in Kolkata.
Later in the day, PM Modi is set to lay the foundation stone, dedicate, and inaugurate infrastructure projects related to rail, road, petroleum, and natural gas worth around Rs. 12,800 crore at Bettiah, West Champaran district in Bihar. The three-day visit spans multiple states, including Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, West Bengal, and Bihar from March 4 to 6.
