Once known as the epicentre of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir, South Kashmir on Saturday presented a strikingly different picture as hundreds of students, youth, government employees and local residents participated in a massive Tiranga Rally in Pulwama under the nationwide ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign ahead of India’s 80th Independence Day celebrations.
Waving the national flag and raising patriotic slogans, participants marched through the streets of Pulwama, showcasing a visible display of national pride in a region that for years remained synonymous with terrorism, separatist unrest and frequent shutdowns. The rally reflected the changing socio-political landscape of South Kashmir, where public participation in national events has witnessed a steady rise in recent years.
The patriotic fervour was not confined to Pulwama alone. Similar Tiranga rallies, awareness programmes and public outreach events were organised across several districts of Jammu and Kashmir, including Srinagar, Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Baramulla, Kupwara, Jammu, Udhampur and Kathua. Hundreds of students, youth volunteers, government employees, civil society members and security personnel participated in these events, carrying the Tricolour and spreading the message of national unity ahead of Independence Day.
The rallies assumed added significance as they were held just days after two separate terror attacks in South Kashmir’s Anantnag and Kulgam districts that left three people dead, including two non-local labourers and a police personnel. The attacks had triggered fresh security concerns in the region, with officials describing them as attempts by Pakistan-backed terror groups to disturb peace and create fear among the local population and non-local workers.
However, the large-scale participation in the Tiranga rallies across South Kashmir sent a contrasting message. Residents, students and community leaders said the enthusiastic turnout reflected the determination of people not to allow terrorism to dictate their lives or derail the peace and development witnessed in recent years. Many participants described the rallies as a collective assertion of unity and resilience in the face of attempts to revive violence in the Valley.
The rallies were organised as part of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, a nationwide initiative aimed at encouraging citizens to hoist the National Flag at their homes and strengthen their emotional connection with the Tricolour. Participants described the events as a celebration of India’s unity, sovereignty and democratic values.
The scenes witnessed in Pulwama stood in sharp contrast to the atmosphere that prevailed in the district during the peak years of militancy, when public gatherings were often overshadowed by security concerns, shutdowns and separatist calls. Once regarded as one of the most volatile regions in the Valley, Pulwama and other districts of South Kashmir have increasingly witnessed public participation in sports, cultural events, developmental programmes and national celebrations.
The widespread participation in Tiranga rallies across Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in South Kashmir, is being viewed as a significant indicator of the changing ground realities in the region. Political observers and residents believe the enthusiastic response reflects a growing preference for peace, stability and development over violence and uncertainty.
Many see the massive turnout as a strong message against attempts by Pakistan-backed terror outfits and their handlers to once again push the region towards unrest through terrorism, radicalisation, stone-pelting and gun culture. The participation of students and youth in large numbers is being interpreted as evidence that the younger generation is increasingly focused on education, employment, entrepreneurship and economic opportunities rather than conflict and disruption.
Officials said the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign seeks to transform the National Flag into a symbol of collective pride and citizen participation. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022 under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative, the campaign has evolved into a nationwide movement encouraging citizens to celebrate the Tricolour and honour the sacrifices of freedom fighters.
This year’s campaign carries additional significance as the country commemorates 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’. A series of programmes, including Tiranga rallies, cycle and bike rallies, exhibitions, cultural events, tricolour illuminations, patriotic concerts and awareness campaigns, are being organised across districts, blocks and panchayats.
As India prepares to celebrate its 80th Independence Day, the sight of thousands of people carrying the Tricolour across Jammu and Kashmir — particularly in areas once affected by militancy and terrorism — is being seen as a powerful symbol of changing aspirations and a growing commitment to peace, progress and national integration. For many, the rallies underscore the belief that attempts to disturb normalcy through violence will not succeed against the aspirations of people seeking a stable and prosperous future.
