National Broadcasting Policy: TRAI Has Big Reveal For All OTT Players- What's The News?

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended against regulating Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, and Jio Cinema. Releasing its recommendations for the formulation of the National Broadcasting Policy-2024, TRAI emphasized the sector’s potential to drive economic growth and innovation.

The telecom regulator asserted that there is no need for a unified legal, administrative, regulatory, and licensing framework for OTT platforms. Instead, TRAI advocated for enhancing ease of doing business (EoDB) by simplifying permission processes and granting infrastructure status to promote growth.

Highlighting its stance, TRAI underscored the importance of fostering a competitive and fair environment for broadcasters. It proposed a 10-year roadmap aimed at nurturing a robust broadcasting ecosystem through growth-oriented policies and data-driven governance. The recommendations aim to ensure widespread access to broadcasting services while stimulating economic activity and supporting employment opportunities.

Moreover, TRAI’s National Broadcasting Policy vision for 2024 seeks to combat piracy and protect the rights of content creators through stringent copyright measures. It advocates for enhancing global outreach of Indian content and promoting high-quality programming across television and OTT platforms. Additionally, the policy encourages the production of indigenous content in diverse formats such as films, animation, visual effects, gaming, and music.

Furthermore, TRAI suggested the development of OTT platforms by Prasar Bharati to promote content from Doordarshan and All India Radio (AIR) channels. This initiative aims to bolster the reach and impact of public broadcasting content in India.

The recommendations come amidst a dynamic landscape where digital consumption of content is on the rise, signaling TRAI’s proactive approach towards fostering innovation and growth in the broadcasting sector. The policy proposals are expected to shape the future trajectory of India’s broadcasting industry, ensuring it remains competitive, consumer-centric, and responsive to evolving technological advancements.
