The alleged phone tapping issue in Andhra Pradesh has created ripples since the leader of the opposition wrote a letter to the Prime Minister seeking investigation into the entire episode. TDP leader and former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu alleged that the ruling Jaganmohan Reddy government was tapping phones for political gains.
“We appeal to you to initiate immediate and stern action in order to check any further unlawful activities by the ruling party and private institutions in Andhra Pradesh. Therefore, it would be appropriate to order an inquiry by a competent body of the Government of India in order to check the illegal acts of phone tapping in Andhra Pradesh,” Naidu requested PM Modi in letter.
After the letter appeared, Andhra Pradesh DGP Gowtam Sawang asked Naidu to provide evidence on phone tapping. On Tuesday, Naidu expressed surprise over how the AP DGP could ask for proof on the allegations of phone tapping to monitor movements of legal luminaries, opposition, advocates, journalists and social activists in the state.
Naidu termed it as laughable that instead of initiating action to verify facts the top cop was seeking proof. He said that he had written many letters and submitted memoranda on false cases filed against TDP leaders in the past, but the DGP never cared to respond.
Speaking to party leaders in an online meeting, the TDP chief said that it was surprising that when he had written his letter to the Prime Minister, the AP DGP wrote his reply. It was now the bound duty of the DGP to clarify what action he had taken against the culprits responsible for the attacks and false cases against TDP leaders. Naidu further asked why the DGP maintained silence when he was obstructed during his visit to Visakhapatnam. First, permission was given for the Vizag visit but finally, hurdles were created.
The TDP chief said that even when he was going to visit Atmakur to console the TDP activists who were driven out of them homes by ruling YSRCP, the front gates of his residential building were tied with ropes to prevent him from coming out of his house.
