Several US Muslim leaders who backed Donald Trump’s presidential campaign are expressing deep disappointment with his recent cabinet appointments, especially his choices for key positions related to Israel. The group, which had been instrumental in his 2016 victory, says the selections do not align with their hopes for a pro-peace administration, particularly concerning the ongoing Gaza conflict and tensions in Lebanon.

Rabiul Chowdhury, an investor and co-founder of Muslims for Trump, shared his frustration with Reuters, stating, “Trump won because of us and we’re not happy with his secretary of state pick and others.” Trump’s decision to appoint Senator Marco Rubio, a strong proponent of Israel, as Secretary of State has been met with disappointment from these Muslim supporters, who had hoped for a cabinet that would prioritize peace and diplomatic solutions over military action. Rubio has publicly opposed a ceasefire in Gaza, calling for Israel to dismantle Hamas entirely.

Additionally, Trump’s nomination of former Governor Mike Huckabee as ambassador to Israel, and Representative Elise Stefanik as US ambassador to the UN, has raised concerns. Both figures have been vocal supporters of Israel’s policies, including its stance on the West Bank and its condemnation of the United Nations’ criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Rexhinaldo Nazarko, Executive Director of the American Muslim Engagement and Empowerment Network, expressed disappointment, stating, “It seems like this administration has been packed entirely with neoconservatives and extremely pro-Israel, pro-war people.” This sentiment reflects broader disillusionment among Muslim communities, who feel their voices are being sidelined in favor of more hawkish foreign policy.

Despite these setbacks, some Trump supporters within the Muslim and Arab American communities continue to hold out hope. Bill Bazzi, mayor of Dearborn Heights, emphasized that Trump’s commitment to peace remains a key factor, while Rola Makki, a Lebanese American Republican leader, suggested that while not all appointments are ideal, the overall outcomes may still align with their goals.

With the conflict in Gaza escalating, these leaders are continuing to push for a shift in US policy and hope that their concerns will be addressed by the Trump administration moving forward.
