Former Army Chief General Ved Prakash Malik, who had led the country’s armed forces during the 1999 Kargil war, on Sunday raised concern over the massive spike in Covid-19 cases in India. He also criticised the ongoing election rallies, farmers’ agitation and other events despite India witnessing a second wave of the pandemic.

General Malik tweeted on Sunday to say that more people are dying in India every day than the casualties the country recorded during the Kargil war which went on for over two months.

He said, “Our nation is at war. 1338 Indians died due to pandemic yesterday (1182 day before): more than 2.5 times TOTAL killed in action in Kargil war. Is the nation focused on this war?”

Referring to the ongoing electoral campaigning in West Bengal and the agitation by the farmers who have been camping at Delhi borders for the past several months protesting against the farm laws, General Malik said, “Election rallies, faith events, farmer agitation, in-fighting over resources going on…Wake up India!”

General Malik’s statement came on the say which saw the biggest single-day spike of over 2.61 lakh Covid-19 cases, pushing the country’s tally to 1.47 crore. The death toll in India has climbed to 1,77,150 as 1,501 fatalities were registered in the past 24 hours.
