Pakistan has unveiled a formidable lineup for the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand, showcasing the sensational returns of Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim. Both players recently emerged from retirement, marking their comeback ahead of the eagerly anticipated T20 World Cup scheduled later this year. While Amir’s last appearance for Pakistan dates back to August 2020, Wasim’s recent triumph with Islamabad United in the PSL 2024 adds to the excitement surrounding their return to national duty.

The decision to reintroduce them to the squad was influenced by various factors, notably Haris Rauf’s injury and concerns regarding Mohammad Nawaz’s current form. Rauf’s shoulder injury, sustained during a Lahore Qalandars’ match in the PSL, sidelined him for the remainder of the tournament. Thus, the inclusion of Amir and Wasim was perceived as a straightforward choice by senior team manager Wahab Riaz, emphasizing their proven match-winning abilities and the need to strengthen the team’s objectives.

In addition to the seasoned veterans, newcomer Usman Khan has earned his maiden call-up for Pakistan, propelled by his outstanding performance in the recent PSL 2024 season. Khan’s stellar batting display, highlighted by his second-highest run tally and record-setting century, has garnered attention and warranted his inclusion in the national squad. Moreover, the emergence of Irfan Khan, hailed as the Emerging Player of PSL 2024, further bolsters Pakistan’s depth.

Khan’s impressive showing for the Karachi Kings, coupled with his previous appearances in the U19 World Cups, underscores his potential to make a significant impact at the international level. With an eye on the series against New Zealand, scheduled from April 18 to April 27 in Rawalpindi and Lahore, Pakistan’s selection committee aims to assemble a formidable squad capable of competing at the highest level. The inclusion of experienced campaigners alongside promising newcomers reflects the team’s commitment to excellence and ambition to achieve success on the global stage.
