On Sunday, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted that the central government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is committed to development beyond the realm of “partisan politics.” Speaking at an event marking the release of a commemorative coin celebrating the birth centenary of Tamil Nadu’s five-time Chief Minister, Kalaignar Muthuvel Karunanidhi, Singh underscored the government’s dedication to democracy and cooperative federalism.
Singh praised Karunanidhi for his dedication to democracy and his role in driving positive changes. He noted that the Modi-led NDA government also believes in the power of democracy to foster development and empowerment, emphasizing that their commitment transcends political divides. Singh highlighted ongoing initiatives, such as the establishment of defence industrial corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, designed to enhance domestic defence manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports. These corridors aim to attract investment, foster innovation, and create a robust defence production ecosystem within India.
The Defence Minister also touched on cultural integration efforts, mentioning the Kashi Tamil Sangamam, which PM Modi inaugurated to celebrate the historical connections between Tamil people and Kashi. Building on this success, the government has introduced the Saurashtra-Tamil Sangamam to celebrate the cultural ties between West and South India.
Reflecting on Karunanidhi’s legacy, Singh stressed the importance of his unwavering commitment to values and dignity for all citizens, regardless of background. He described Karunanidhi as a model of leadership, whose dedication to social justice and cultural advancement is a valuable lesson for future generations.
In unveiling the commemorative Karunanidhi coin, Singh paid tribute to Karunanidhi’s lifetime of progress, justice, and societal betterment. He emphasized that Karunanidhi’s impact was felt far beyond Tamil Nadu, marking him as a significant figure in Indian politics and a staunch advocate for social justice. The coin serves as a symbol of collective gratitude and a reminder of the enduring values Karunanidhi championed.
