US Reaffirms Unwavering Support As Israel Strikes Hezbollah In Lebanon

United States reiterated its unwavering commitment to Israel’s defense following Israeli military strikes in Lebanon, aimed at preventing a significant attack by Hezbollah. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin discussed Israel’s security with his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant, affirming the US stance against any threats from Iran-backed groups like Hezbollah, according to Pentagon spokesman Major General Pat Ryder.

“Secretary Austin reaffirmed the United States’ ironclad commitment to Israel’s defense against any attacks by Iran and its regional partners and proxies,” Ryder said in a statement. The Pentagon emphasized that the US remains “postured to support the defense of Israel.”

In response to the escalating situation, Gallant declared a 48-hour nationwide state of emergency in Israel starting at 06:00 am (0300 GMT) on Sunday, following what the Israeli military described as pre-emptive strikes in Lebanon. Gallant briefed Austin on the military action, stating that the strikes were carried out to thwart an imminent threat to Israeli citizens.

The US National Security Council echoed this support, with spokesman Sean Savett noting that President Joe Biden is closely monitoring the developments. “We will keep supporting Israel’s right to defend itself, and we will keep working for regional stability,” Savett said.

Hezbollah, in retaliation for the death of its military commander in an Israeli strike last month, announced large-scale drone and rocket attacks deep into Israeli territory on Sunday.
