Fresh US intelligence shows that Israel is getting ready for possible airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. CNN reported this on Tuesday, citing several US officials familiar with the matter.
However, it is still unclear whether Israel has made a final decision. At the same time, officials in Washington are divided over whether the strike will actually happen.
So far, the National Security Council, the Israeli Embassy in Washington, and the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office have not responded to requests for comment, according to Reuters.
Chances of Israeli Strikes Have Risen
According to a source familiar with the intelligence, “The likelihood of an Israeli strike on an Iranian nuclear facility has gone up significantly in recent months,” CNN reported.
Moreover, the source said a strike becomes more likely if the US makes a deal with Iran that allows it to keep some of its uranium stockpile.
Talks Between US and Iran Are Ongoing
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump’s administration continues to negotiate with Iran. Their goal is to reach a diplomatic agreement over Tehran’s nuclear program.
Signs Point to Israeli Military Readiness
According to CNN, the new intelligence includes several clues. These include statements by Israeli officials—both public and private—along with intercepted communications and signs of military activity.
Additionally, two sources told CNN that US surveillance picked up indicators of military readiness. These included the movement of aerial munitions and the completion of an air drill.
Iran’s Leader Rejects US Demands
On the same day, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei sharply criticized the US. As reported by state media, he called American demands to stop uranium enrichment “excessive and outrageous.”
Furthermore, Khamenei said he doubts a new nuclear agreement can be reached.
Trump Sets Deadline, Keeps Military Option Open
Trump has made his position clear. If talks fail, he is open to using military force. However, he wants negotiations to continue for now.
In fact, back in mid-March, Trump sent a letter to Khamenei. According to someone familiar with the exchange, he gave Iran 60 days to show progress.
That deadline has now passed. It has been over 60 days since the letter and 38 days since the first round of talks began.
