Abu Dhabi [UAE]: To mark the end of National Reading Month 2025, the Ministry of Culture (MOC) has launched the ‘Reading Ambassadors Initiative’ in collaboration with the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood and the Federal Youth Authority. This initiative aims to cultivate a culture of reading by appointing mentors and literacy advocates who will empower communities to make reading a daily habit.
Promoting Reading Through Mentorship
The inaugural edition of the initiative features ambassadors in four categories:
- Writers and Pioneers – Renowned authors and literary leaders
- Youth – Members of various UAE Youth Councils
- Volunteers – Trainers and social content creators
- Children – Young champions of the UAE Arab Reading Challenge
These ambassadors will play a pivotal role by launching impactful initiatives, sharing success stories, and promoting best practices that encourage habitual reading.
Aligning with National Identity and Culture
The Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood aligns this initiative with the theme of Emirati Children’s Day 2025 – ‘The Right to Identity and National Culture.’ This theme emphasizes instilling national values in children, enhancing their connection to Arabic culture, and strengthening their proficiency in the Arabic language.
Leaders in the Writers and Pioneers Category
The initiative features distinguished literary figures such as:
- Shamma bint Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan – Chairperson of the Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan Cultural and Educational Institutions
- Sultan Al Ameemi – Writer, poet, and Executive Director of the Poetry and Heritage Department at Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage
- Maitha Al Khayat – Internationally acclaimed author and illustrator
Youth and Volunteers Championing Literacy
Ambassadors from various UAE Youth Councils include:
- Shareena Al Suwaidi – Abu Dhabi Youth Council
- Hazza Al Shehhi – Ras Al Khaimah Youth Council
Additionally, notable volunteers such as Hashem Al Wali and Fatima Al Hammadi will lead initiatives to encourage literacy across communities.
Children Leading by Example
The children’s category features young leaders from the Emirati Children’s Parliament, including:
- Rowdah bint Nehayan bin Zayed Al Nahyan
- Nahyan bin Diab bin Saif Al Nahyan
Annual Forum to Celebrate Achievements
To highlight the impact of the initiative, MOC will host an Annual Forum to showcase the achievements of the ambassadors and their contributions to fostering a culture of reading. Creative spaces within cultural centers and libraries will provide ambassadors with platforms to present their projects and share experiences.
Commitment to Knowledge and Progress
Mubarak Al Nakhi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, reaffirmed the MOC’s commitment to making reading a cornerstone of knowledge and progress. He emphasized that fostering a culture of reading is a shared responsibility that requires active participation from all sectors of society.
The ‘Reading Ambassadors Initiative’ is poised to inspire generations and uphold the UAE’s vision of positioning reading as a catalyst for progress and sustainable development.
