Storm Debby: Know Florida Landfall Date; Preparations and More

Tropical Storm Debby is intensifying and is expected to make landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast on Monday. The storm poses significant risks, including life-threatening storm surges and heavy rainfall. Here are the key details:

Current Status:

Location and Strength: As of Sunday morning, Debby was about 130 miles west-southwest of Tampa with sustained winds of 65 mph. The storm is moving northward and is expected to turn north later in the day.

Forecast Landfall: The National Hurricane Center forecasts landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region, between the Suwannee River and the Ochlockonee River.

Warnings and Impacts:

Evacuations and Preparations: Mandatory evacuations are in place in parts of Pasco, Hernando, and Citrus counties. Leon County is opening shelters. The Florida National Guard and Florida State Guard have been activated for assistance.

Emergency Declaration: President Joe Biden has declared an emergency in Florida, authorizing FEMA to coordinate disaster relief efforts.

Storm Characteristics:

Size and Movement: Debby is large and slow-moving, which increases its potential for causing significant damage. The storm could bring hurricane-force winds and a dangerous storm surge, especially if it coincides with high tide.

Rainfall and Flooding: Rainfall could reach up to 30 inches in some areas, leading to potentially catastrophic flooding. The storm’s slow movement will exacerbate the flooding risk.

Additional Effects:

Flight and Travel Disruptions: Over 1,500 flights have been cancelled, and nearly 3,000 delayed. Carnival Cruise Line has rescheduled its Carnival Elation ship’s return to Jacksonville.

Tornado Risk: A few tornadoes are possible through Monday morning in western and northern Florida and southern Georgia.

Path and Future Impact:

Movement and Timing: After landfall, Debby is expected to move slowly through the Southeast, impacting areas such as Savannah and the South Carolina Coast later in the week.

Historical Context: Debby is the fourth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30. This season is anticipated to be one of the worst on record.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and follow evacuation orders and safety recommendations.
