Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu is facing another political firestorm. Two of his close advisors have been arrested for allegedly advancing Qatari interests in Israel. The scandal, named ‘Qatargate,’ has sparked outrage, raising concerns about foreign influence in Israeli politics. Qatar, which serves as a mediator for Hamas, has long been accused of funding the militant group. Benjamin Netanyahu, already battling corruption charges, dismisses the case as a political witch hunt. However, the controversy further weakens his government at a time of heightened security tensions.
Netanyahu’s Advisors Accused of Promoting Qatari Interests
Israeli authorities have arrested Jonatan Urich, Netanyahu’s media advisor, and Eli Feldstein, a former spokesman. They are accused of accepting payments from Qatar to improve the Gulf state’s image while it mediated a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel. Investigators say funds were funneled through an American lobbyist. The campaign reportedly aimed to undermine Egypt’s role as a mediator while promoting Qatar as a key peace broker.
According to Israeli media, Urich and Feldstein may face bribery, fraud, money laundering, and foreign agent charges. Another key figure in the case is Zvika Klein, editor-in-chief of the Jerusalem Post. After a Qatar-sponsored visit, he published articles defending the Gulf state against claims of supporting Hamas. Though not facing charges, Klein has been barred from speaking publicly on the matter.
Qatar’s Influence Sparks Outrage in Israel
For years, Netanyahu approved Qatari cash transfers to Gaza, claiming it would help contain Hamas. However, critics argue the funds strengthened the militant group, which later launched the October 7, 2023, attacks that ignited the war. Now, amid escalating violence, suspicions over Qatar’s influence have deepened.
The scandal coincides with Netanyahu’s corruption trial and his attempts to dismiss Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, whose agency is probing the Qatar links. Many see the move as an effort to derail the investigation. As Israel faces ongoing war and internal strife, ‘Qatargate’ exposes growing concerns over foreign meddling and the integrity of Netanyahu’s leadership.
