Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu directed heightened security procedures at Israeli missions across the globe following the murder of two embassy employees outside a Jewish museum in Washington on Wednesday. The slain employees, a married couple-to-be, were ambushed by a gunman who yelled pro-Palestinian incantations when he was arrested.
The suspect is currently in custody, and the attack triggered immediate safety concerns among Israeli officials regarding their representatives abroad.
Netanyahu Calls for Security Upgrade Globally
After the Wednesday evening tragic shooting, Netanyahu took immediate action. He ordered security to be stepped up around Israeli missions globally. The move is meant to protect diplomats and personnel in light of heightened security threats.
The incident took place outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington where embassy staff members had gathered for an event meant for young professionals.
The Attack and Victims
The gunman struck the couple when they were exiting the event. Both of them were shot close-up. Israeli Ambassador to the United States Yechiel Leiter called them “a young, beautiful couple” and said they had intended to marry soon. The man had just bought a ring with the proposal plans in Jerusalem. Their names have not come out yet.
Shooter in Custody
Washington police confirmed they had the suspect in custody soon after the attack. Police Chief Pamela Smith said that the gunman entered the museum after the shooting. Event security took him into custody inside. Prior to opening fire, the suspect walked in front of the museum and approached a small crowd, pulling out a handgun.
Following his arrest, the suspect chanted “Free, free Palestine” and showed where he had thrown the gun.
Rising Security Concerns
This event underscores growing risks Israeli envoys face around the world. Netanyahu’s move is a blatant reaction to secure Israeli staff abroad. It is also an indication of escalated tensions regarding Israel and the Palestinian issue. Security will further reinforce now to avoid similar tragedies and secure Israeli missions across the world.
