The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) launched a targeted ground operation in Gaza on Wednesday, just a day after carrying out large-scale airstrikes that ended a ceasefire with Hamas. The ground activity focuses on expanding the security zone between northern and southern Gaza and increasing Israeli control in the Netzarim Corridor.
IDF Expands Control in Gaza
According to an IDF statement, “Over the past day, IDF troops began targeted ground activities in the central and southern Gaza Strip to expand the security zone and create a partial buffer between northern and southern Gaza. As part of these operations, the troops extended their control to the center of the Netzarim Corridor.”
The Golani Brigade has been stationed in the Southern Command area and is ready for further operations in Gaza, ensuring continued action against terrorist organizations.
Israeli Defence Minister Issues Warning
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz issued a “last warning” to Gaza residents, urging them to follow the advice of US President Donald Trump. Katz said in a video statement, “Residents of Gaza, this is the last warning. Return the hostages and remove Hamas from power, and other options will open up for you — including the possibility of leaving for other places.”
Heavy Civilian Casualties Reported
The Gaza Health Ministry reported that at least 436 people, including 183 children and 94 women, have been killed since the strikes began. Another 678 people have been injured. The Israeli military claims that it targets only militants but blames civilian casualties on Hamas, stating that the group operates in densely populated areas.
Continuing Military Strikes
The military confirmed that as part of the ongoing offensive, it struck dozens of militants and Hamas sites, including a battalion command center. Despite the ceasefire in January, the conflict has been one of the deadliest for humanitarian workers, according to the United Nations.
