A mother was arrested in Anta town, Rajasthan’s Baran district, for fatally strangling her 13-year-old daughter while her 11-year-old son managed to escape without harm. Police claim that the alleged mother is mentally ill.

Assistant sub-inspector, Anta police station, Radhey Shyam said the incident took place on Saturday late afternoon.

The eye witness is the 11-year-old son, who told police that first their mother took her sister to the bathroom and tried to strangulate her and later dragged her towards the porch. She then stepped on her neck and strangled her with a chunni (cloth), said the boy.

The 11-year-old son screamed when he caught his mother in the act. As neighbours heard the commotion and rushed to help, they were unable to get inside the house because all the gates were locked.

In order to take the unconscious girl to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, the neighbours had to smash down the door.

At the time of the incident, the father Shivraj Singh, an auto-rickshaw driver was out earning a livelihood, and their elder son Nikendra (16) was in school, said the sub-inspector.

Police said the woman is mentally ill and had no remorse for her actions. On asking why she did this, the woman said, ‘My daughter, I have killed her.’

Police were informed by the woman’s family that she was depressed and had been acting suspiciously lately. They claimed that she would suddenly become enraged with children and beat them.
