Three minors tragically lost their lives on Saturday due to mushroom poisoning, while numerous others are currently in critical condition after consuming wild mushrooms in Saphai village. This incident occurred under the jurisdiction of the Laskeiñ Community and Rural Development (C&RD) Block within Meghalaya’s West Jaiñtia Hills (WJH) district, as confirmed by local authorities.

He mentioned that the first family affected comprises Jumonlang Suchiang (43), identified as the mother, who has been referred to the Northeast Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Science (NEIGRIHMS) along with her 10-month-old son. Both of them are currently in critical condition. Unfortunately, her three other children – Wansalan Suchiang (14), Kitlangki Suchiang (10), and Riwanka Suchiang (8) – tragically passed away at the MCH hospital in Jowai.

The Superintendent of Police (SP) provided an update, revealing that the second family impacted by the incident comprises Ribaitki Shadap, Shanmi Shadap, and Sah Shadap. They are currently in critical condition and are undergoing treatment at the MCH hospital. The third affected family consists of Over Sutnga, Anna Suchiang, and Niwanshwa Kanai, all of whom are currently in critical condition at the MCH hospital.

Dr. C Daniala, the Medical Superintendent (MS) of NEIGRIHMS, mentioned that a 56-year-old woman, identified as one of the victims, along with two family members, was transferred to the hospital when her health deteriorated significantly. Upon arrival, she was immediately admitted to the ICU due to advanced liver and kidney problems, along with unstable blood pressure and mental condition. “Currently, she remains in critical condition with severe shock and dysfunction in multiple organs.”

A 70-year-old man experienced significant liver damage, leading to confusion upon admission. Medical tests revealed severe liver inflammation, blood clotting difficulties, and kidney issues. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to the Medicine ICU on Sunday. Treatment has included antidotes, fluids, and supportive care, with plans for hemodialysis scheduled for tomorrow, according to Daniela.

The 12-year-old girl in critical condition is the third patient, suffering from acute liver failure, acute kidney injury, and electrolyte imbalance. Additionally, she is experiencing stage 2 hepatic encephalopathy, impacting her brain function due to liver-related issues.

Dr. Vikash, a spokesperson from NEIGRIHMS, mentioned that most of these incidents occurred recently in the Jaiñtia Hills region. He emphasized the importance of rural communities being well-informed about safe mushroom consumption and identifying toxic varieties. Mushroom poisoning can have fatal consequences, so it’s crucial for people to exercise caution.
