Breastfeeding is a crucial time for both the mother and the baby. During this phase, the mother›s diet plays a vital role in providing nutrients to the infant through breast milk. Needless to say, a mother’s body is really weak after delivery; she also needs to get extra nutrition and energy to deliver nutrients to her little one.
Galactagogues are those foods that facilitate milk production and have been used for centuries all around the world; they not only increase the production of milk but also provide additional nutrients to the mother. Many nursing mothers experience constant hunger as a result of the extra calories their bodies use to make each ounce of milk.
It is essential for nursing mothers to maintain a healthy and nutritious diet not only for the baby’s sake but also for the sake of avoiding unwanted deficiencies leading to weakness, fatigue, anaemia, or putting on excessive weight due to constant munching. Here is a list of Indian foods that are beneficial for nursing mothers:
Ghee: Breastfeeding moms should consume adequate amounts of ghee in order to improve digestion and ensure smooth bowel movements.
Ginger is an effective galactagogues that also supports the immune system and soothes nausea.
Methi is rich in iron, calcium, and vitamin K.
Which are essential for both the mother and baby. Methi helps increase breast milk production and also helps combat fatigue effectively.
Shatavari: This wonder herb for lactating mothers helps to improve the quantity and quality of breast milk. It is rich in B-complex vitamins, zinc, and calcium.
Papaya (raw) is an excellent source of lactation. Consuming raw papaya increases the levels of oxytocin, which in turn stimulates breast milk.
Milk and milk products are a good source of calcium, which is important for the baby’s bone development. They also provide protein and vitamin B12, which are necessary for the mother’s health. Some of the best milk and milk products to include in your diet while breastfeeding are milk, yoghurt, and paneer.
