Air India Airport Services recently held walk-in interviews for 2,216 job openings for handymen and utility agents, drawing a massive crowd to the interview center in Mumbai’s Kalina on Tuesday. Videos circulating on social media show thousands of job seekers rushing towards the venue, with some even climbing vehicles and trees to get there faster. The chaotic scenes led authorities to step in to prevent a stampede. George Abram, the general secretary of the Aviation Industry Employees Guild, described the recruitment process as “mismanaged,” according to India Today.

The vacancies were for handyman positions, which involve various repair and maintenance tasks, and utility agents. In a notification dated June 28, AI Airport Services Ltd (formerly Air India Air Transport Services Limited) announced its intention to fill existing vacancies and create a wait-list for future openings. The positions are open to both male and female Indian nationals and are offered on a fixed-term contract basis of three years, renewable based on performance and company needs. The exact number of vacancies may vary according to operational requirements.
The company emphasized that reservations will follow Presidential Directives, with actual reservation numbers depending on the current workforce at the time of appointment. Despite the chaos, the company has assured that all submitted CVs will be reviewed, and eligible candidates will be contacted for the next steps.
This event follows a similar incident in Bharuch, Gujarat, where hundreds of job seekers showed up for an interview held by Thermax Company for just 10 positions. Videos of the crowd struggling to enter the interview center also went viral on social media.
