Just days after lifting a five-month internet ban due to ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki tribes which resulted in 175 deaths and hundreds injured, Manipur has banned mobile internet again. This decision comes in response to escalating protests following the viral spread of photos depicting the murdered bodies of two minor students. Earlier today, hundreds of students, outraged by the killings, marched towards Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s residence. Their path was blocked by security forces deploying tear gas and smoke bombs, leaving several protesters injured. The two students, missing since the peak of the Meitei-Kuki conflict in July, were last seen in distressing photos circulated on social media. The distraught parents of the boy publicly condemned the heinous crimes. The students, reportedly in a relationship, were believed to have been abducted during a relaxed curfew. The Central Bureau of Investigation is now handling the case.
