The security convoy of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh came under attack by armed miscreants in Jiribam on Monday. The assault resulted in injuries to two policemen, including the vehicle’s driver. The security detail was in Jiribam to prepare for an upcoming visit by CM Biren Singh.

Reacting to the incident, CM Biren Singh condemned the attack, labeling it “highly condemnable” and viewing it as an attack on the “people of the state.” He stated, “It is very unfortunate and highly condemnable. It is an attack directly on the Chief Minister, means directly on the people of the state. So, the state Government has to do something. So, I will take a call from all of my colleagues and we will take a decision.”

Biren Singh’s visit to Jiribam was planned in response to reports of fresh violence in the area. According to Manipur Police, several houses belonging to both Meitei and Kuki communities were set ablaze by unknown assailants in Jiribam District, following the murder of an individual.

The violence has forced around 600 people from Manipur’s Jiribam area to seek shelter in Assam’s Cachar district. In response, Cachar district police have increased security measures along the border areas. Further details about the incident are still awaited.
