Despite the government reiterating commitment to women safety, there is no let-up in crimes against women in Andhra Pradesh. In another such gruesome crime, a woman died after a man burnt her alive after she rejected his advances in Vijayawada.

The woman, who died, was a nurse by profession. Agitated over the rejection, the young man poured petrol on the woman and set her on fire, following which the young woman died on the spot. The accused is also reported to be in critical condition after he caught on fire. The woman (24) from Vissannapeta of Krishna district was working as a nurse in a Covid-19 care center in Vijayawada.

The man named Nagbhushanam from Reddigudem mandal Srirampura was harassing her on the pretext of proposing to her. The victim also lodged a complaint with the Governor Peta police station (Vijayawada) four days ago.

The police called him and issued a warning that he would not disturb the woman while the young woman withdrew her complaint. The victim left for her room at around 9 pm while on duty at the Covid Care Center.Meanwhile, Nagbhushan tried to talk to her, which led to a fight between them. Nagbhushan poured the petrol and set her ablaze.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Vijayawada, M Ramesh said, “The woman had been in love with the man for the last four years, but a few months ago, she wanted to end the relationship with him. Yet, the man has been stalking her and harassing her to marry him. After her complaint, Nagabhusan was called to the police station and warned. After he gave an undertaking that he would not trouble her again, the woman withdrew the complaint.”
