A political activist, Jagdish Chandra (39), from Panuadhokhan village, was discovered dead in a car on Friday in Bhikiasain town, according to Salt sub-division tehsildar Nisha Rani.

Reportedly, he had 25 wounds on his body and it appeared batons or other blunt weapons were used in his murder.

The mother of Chandra’s wife, her stepfather, and her stepbrother were apprehended while attempting to transport the deceased’s body to a morgue, according to Rani, who added that they were detained right away.

According to Rani, Chandra was allegedly kidnapped by his in-laws on Thursday from Shilapani Bridge after the couple’s August 21 wedding.

Chandra had contested in an unsuccessful byelection for the Salt assembly seat on behalf of the Uttarakhand Parivartan Party in 2021. Additionally, he ran for state assembly in February of this year but was unsuccessful.

According to PC Tiwari, leader of the Uttarakhand Parivartan Party, the couple requested security in a letter to the government on August 27, citing a threat to their lives.

He claimed Chandra might have been saved if the administration had responded to the couple’s complaint.

He requested Rs 1 crore in compensation for the victim’s widow, calling the murder a source of shame for Uttarakhand.
