The Maharashtra government has rescheduled the Eid-e-Milad holiday in Mumbai from September 16 to September 18. This decision was made after the local Muslim community opted to hold its Eid processions on September 18 to avoid overlapping with Anant Chaturdashi, the final day of the Ganesh festival, which falls on September 17.
In an official statement, the government noted that district collectors could adjust the holiday in other regions based on local circumstances. Maharashtra Congress leader Naseem Khan had earlier requested Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to shift the holiday to September 18, highlighting the community’s efforts to ensure both festivals could be celebrated harmoniously.
This is the second consecutive year the Muslim community has voluntarily rescheduled its Eid-e-Milad processions to support peaceful coexistence and prevent disruptions during the Ganpati immersion process. Eid-e-Milad, observed to mark the birth of Prophet Muhammad, is traditionally celebrated on September 16, depending on the moon’s sighting.
