In Madhya Pradesh, the saying “MP Ajab Hai, Sabse Gajab Hai” takes on new meaning in Bhidavad village, where a unique post-Diwali ritual unfolds. Here, villagers lie on the ground and allow cows to walk over them, believing that this act will bring divine blessings and fulfill their deepest wishes.

This centuries-old tradition was observed on Saturday, the day following Diwali, in Bhidavad village of Ujjain district. According to ANI, the villagers fast for five days beforehand and spend the night before in the temple, engaged in bhajans and kirtans. As morning arrives, they perform ceremonial worship of cows, who are seen as the embodiment of 33 crore deities.

During the main event, villagers line up and lie down, while cows are led over them amidst the sound of drums and chants. Despite the apparent risk, participants view this “holy stampede” as a way to attain blessings and protection. Locals claim that no one has ever been seriously hurt, attributing this safety to the blessings of the gods.

As the cows pass, the villagers quickly rise, celebrating in gratitude and joy. This spirited display draws visitors from nearby villages, who come to witness the rare expression of faith and resilience.

For Bhidavad’s residents, this annual ritual is more than a spectacle; it reflects their deep spirituality and fearless devotion. In Madhya Pradesh, where faith is often woven into tradition in unexpected ways, some blessings are just a cow’s hoofprint away.
