Love at First Call: A Blind Date That Changed His Life

Douglas Emhoff, husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, shared the touching story of how they met during his speech at the Democratic National Convention. Emhoff, 59, recounted how a blind date in 2013 led him to the love of his life. The date was set up after a successful meeting with a client who insisted on introducing him to Harris.

The Awkward First Voicemail

In a moment of spontaneity, Emhoff called Harris at 8:30 am the next day, an unusual time for such a call, leaving a long, rambling voicemail. Harris, who was at home waiting for a contractor, returned his call, leading to a conversation that lasted over an hour. Emhoff humorously noted that Harris now plays that awkward voicemail for him every year on their wedding anniversary, which falls this Thursday as Harris prepares to accept the Democratic nomination for president.

A Joyful Warrior and Devoted Family Woman

Emhoff praised Harris as a “joyful warrior” who has always prioritized their blended family, which includes his two children Ella and Cole from a previous marriage. He expressed his deep admiration for her commitment to both her family and her country, describing her as the perfect partner for him and the right leader for the nation at this pivotal time. Emhoff, who was raised in a Jewish family, also highlighted their interfaith connection, with Harris joining him at synagogue and him accompanying her to church.

As Harris makes history as the first Indian-American and woman of color to be nominated for president by a major political party, Emhoff’s heartfelt words provided a personal glimpse into the love and partnership that have defined their lives together.
