All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi won the Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat, defeating Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, Madhavi Latha with a margin of 3,38,087. Owaisi secured 6,61,981 votes. Notably, the Congress fielded Mohammad Waliullah Sameer, while the BRS fielded Gaddam Srinivas Yadav.

The Hyderabad seat in Telangana has been an AIMIM stronghold for the last four decades. Interestingly, Owaisi has won the seat for four straight terms since 2004.

Who is Asaduddin Owaisi?

Asaduddin Owaisi was born on 13 May 1969 to Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi and Najmunnisa Begum. He is a 4-time Member of Parliament representing the Hyderabad constituency in Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament. For years, he has been regularly listed by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre (RISSC), among the 500 Most Influential Muslims worldwide.

Political Career

Owaisi made his political debut in the year 1994 in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections. Contesting from the Charminar constituency which his party has been winning since 1967, he defeated his nearest rival a breakaway party Majlis Bachao Tehreek’s candidate by a margin of 40 thousand votes.

In 2014,  Owaisi was awarded the Sansad Ratna award (Gem of parliamentarians) for his performance in the 15th session of the Indian parliament. During this period, he asked 1080 questions in the Parliament compared to the national average of 292. And also with an attendance of 70 per cent.
