A massive cloudburst triggered flash floods in Dharali villages of Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi. Many houses have been swept away and more than 50 people are reported missing. The cloudburst took place in the catchment area of the Kheer Ganga river, causing dreadful floods. 

A local news agency informed PTI that 20-25 hotels and homestays might have washed away with the floods. 

Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also expressed concern. He expressed on social media platform X, “The news of heavy damage caused by a cloudburst in the Dharali (Uttarkashi) region is extremely sad and distressing. SDRF, NDRF, district administration, and other related teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations on a war footing. In this regard, I am in constant contact with senior officials, and the situation is being closely monitored. I pray to God for everyone’s safety.”

Brigadier Mandeep Dhillon, Brigade Commander, stated that the landslide took place around 1:45 PM near Dharali village, approximately 4 km from the Indian Army camp at Harshil. Within ten minutes, the Army had deployed 150 personnel to the site, equipped with specialised medical and rescue gear, including doctors, who are actively involved in the ongoing rescue efforts.

No Loss of Property of Life on Sukhi Top

Commissioner Garhwal Mandal, Vinay Shankar Pandey confirmed that there is no loss of property of life on the Sukhi Top due to the cloudburst that occurred in that region.

"However, the disadvantage is that the rain is extremely heavy, causing the water level to rise. Consequently, the situation is being closely monitored, and the priority is to evacuate people to safe areas. Our Army, NDRF, and SDRF teams are continuously engaged there. People are definitely being rescued with the help of local people," he told news agency ANI.

Principal Secretary RK Sudhanshu informed PTI that the road connectivity in Uttarkashi has been severely impacted because of the flash floods and twin cloudbursts in the region. "Since road connectivity has been impacted, a bridge has been washed away, we are talking to the officials of BRO, PWD, our priority is to restore connectivity, the weather is bad at present, we are not able to provide relief, and rescue through helicopter services. But SDRF, Army are there... Prima facie, it seems that 40-50 properties have got damaged. We are trying to get further information, we will be acting accordingly," he said....

Uttarkashi police confirmed on X that due to the rising water levels in Kheer Gad in Harsil area, there are many reports of damage in Dharali. The police, SDRF, and disaster management and response teams are at the site for rescue operations.
