Who’s Buying The Most Sex Toys In India? The Surprising Leaders In The Market

The purchase of sexual wellness products has long been considered taboo in many parts of India. For those living in metro cities, the typical experience involves navigating through narrow, dimly-lit lanes to find a discreet store, while those from smaller towns often rely on international trips or friends living abroad to fulfill their needs. However, the landscape of sexual wellness products in India is shifting rapidly, with the rise of online shopping platforms offering discreet access to these products.

Changing Trends in Online Purchases: Men vs. Women

The surge in online sales of sexual wellness products has allowed businessmen to tap into a previously overlooked market. According to a survey conducted by ThatsPersonal, an online platform for sexual wellness products, data from over 80,000 orders reveals that men account for a staggering 62% of the customers, while women make up the remaining 38%. Despite the growing acceptance of these products, a clear gender gap exists in purchasing patterns.

What Are Customers Buying?

The survey also offers insight into what products are most popular among the sexes. Women primarily purchase intimate massagers, while men are more inclined toward lubricants. Other popular items in the market include delay sprays, sexy lingerie, pleasure rings, condoms, and “sexcitement” lotions, which enhance intimacy.

Regional Preferences: Where Do Women Buy the Most?

Interestingly, women from Punjab have been found to have a distinct preference for “sexcitement” products, such as arousal oils, compared to women from other states. In 2016, Punjab recorded the highest number of “sexcitement” product sales, according to the survey. This trend highlights the regional differences in consumer behaviour, with certain states having unique purchasing habits when it comes to sexual wellness.

Gujaratis and the Navratri Effect

The survey further uncovered intriguing patterns during the nine-day festival of Navratri, particularly among Gujaratis. A marked increase in sexual appetite is noted during this period, with sales of lubricants, adult games, edible lingerie, and other novelty products seeing a significant rise. The demand is not only limited to the festive season but is also prominent in smaller towns like Rajkot, Baroda, and Bhuj. These regions see a higher interest in intimate massagers, sexy lingerie, and even penis pumps.

Bhopal: A City of Experimentation

In Bhopal, experimentation seems to be the norm, with customers purchasing a variety of flavored condoms. Interestingly, women in Bhopal account for 28% of the condom sales, showing that women in this region are more open to exploring different flavors and varieties of condoms.

Assam and Uttar Pradesh: Unique Regional Trends

The survey also highlighted regional differences in product preferences, particularly in Assam and Uttar Pradesh. While Assamese people are most likely to purchase kinky and BDSM-related products, men from Uttar Pradesh show a stronger preference for penis enlargement products, which indicates a more adventurous or experimental approach to sexual wellness.

Baroda: A Surprising Female Preference

Despite the overall trend of fewer women purchasing sexual wellness products, Baroda stands out. The survey found that 53% of the products sold in Baroda were bought by women, showing a higher-than-average interest from women in this city.

The Changing Landscape of Sexual Wellness in India

The data reveals that while sexual wellness products may still carry a degree of stigma, attitudes are changing. Both men and women are increasingly purchasing items to enhance their intimate lives, with distinct regional and gender-based preferences emerging. The rise of online shopping has played a crucial role in making these products more accessible, but cultural and regional influences still dictate what people buy. As these trends continue to evolve, we can expect further shifts in the sexual wellness landscape in India.
