Sabyasachi Mukherjee Makes History, Becomes First Indian Designer To Walk At Met Gala

Renowned fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee made history by becoming the first Indian designer to attend the prestigious Met Gala. On Tuesday, May 7, he graced the fashion extravaganza in a long coat and jewels from Sabyasachi High Jewellery.

Sharing his outfit details on social media, Sabyasachi described his attire as “An embroidered cotton duster coat from the Sabyasachi Resort 2024 collection layered with tourmalines, pearls, emeralds, and diamonds from Sabyasachi High Jewellery.”

He also shared a video of himself posing on the Met Gala carpet and striking poses on the streets of New York City on his official Instagram account.

Fans and celebrities applauded Sabyasachi for his historic moment. Filmmaker Zoya Akhtar dropped a heart emoji, and one user commented, “And I feel so proud to see a man sticking to his beliefs of core Indian fashion intricacies and making it a huge luxury brand for the world.”

Another comment read, “One of the best fashion designers in the world from India in the Met Gala event…This is the absolute moment!”

In addition to attending the event himself, Sabyasachi also designed a stunning saree for Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt, which she mentioned was created by 163 artisans in over 1,965 hours. Alia looked stunning in the floral saree, perfectly aligned with the event’s dress code, ‘The Garden of Time’.

The Met Gala is an annual event held on the first Monday of May at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
