Manish Malhotra, the designer who changed the face of Indian fashion and made a mark internationally, impressed everyone in 1998 with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The film’s costume, worn by Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Kajol, and other actors, is still iconic to the audience’s heart.Malhotra’s brilliant designs were received with universal acclaim, yet there is a fascinating twist: he also received an award from the iconic Michael Jackson.
Posting a nostalgic video on social media, Manish shared how he won the Costume Award for his contribution to Kuch Kuch Hota Hai at the 1998 Bollywood Awards at Nassau Coliseum, New York. In the nostalgic clip, Michael Jackson can be seen dressed in a black sherwani created by Malhotra. Looking back at the time, Manish penned, “Throwback: It was an Honour and so Exciting to be dressing Fabulous @michaeljackson at the Bollywood Awards. I won a Costume Award for @karanjohar’s #kuchkuchhotahai. When I received a message from Kamal Dhandona and the late S P Hinduja, the show sponsors, to dress #michaeljackson, I was ecstatic. At that point in time, 1998, I wished to incorporate a Global infusion into the classic sherwani cut, so I designed a shorter sherwani with trousers and a shawl/stoll in textured handloom with woven silk and brocade borders. all created in 1 day and without measurements. #memoriesforlife”
