The Chanel 25 is the It-Girl bag of the year, with a signature quilt, gold-colored hardware, and a stylish hob cut. In small, medium, and large sizes, with a palette of bold colors and pastels, it’s steadily increasing in popularity.

Even though it is a new launch, the Chanel 25 has the sheen of a classic already, with fashionistas sure it will last for several seasons. It was launched in campaigns with Jennie and Dua Lipa, photographed by David Sims and directed by Gordon von Steiner, and the bag has received widespread publicity. Dua Lipa even coordinated the color of a black Chanel 25 for Chanel’s haute couture show in January.

Although celebrity endorsements do not necessarily cause trends to the same extent in today’s socially mediated environment, the hype surrounding the Chanel 25 seems genuine and organic. Luxury handbags, having reached It-Girl status, are aspirational aesthetics, and more rivals emerge alongside the Hermès Birkin and Kelly. The mini Kelly, for instance, was popular in Fall last year but lost somewhat from the view as Spring went in.

In India, Ananya Panday was declared as the first-ever Chanel brand ambassador, flaunting her own Chanel 25 in a post. Although the mini Kelly has had its moments, it’s apparent that Chanel’s new release is the focus now.

But as far as the long-standing prestige of the Hermès Birkin is concerned, it’s a stiff competition. Whether the Chanel 25 will be able to overtake it eventually will only be known with time.
