Gollum Returns: Andy Serkis Set To Reprise Iconic Role In New ‘Lord of the Rings’ Film

Warner Bros. has revealed plans for upcoming films within the ‘Lord of the Rings’ franchise, scheduled for release in 2026, promising to “explore storylines yet to be told.”

Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO David Zaslav officially announced the news during the first-quarter earnings conference call, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The first installment of this new series, tentatively titled ‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,’ will center on the mysterious character Gollum. Actor Andy Serkis, acclaimed for his portrayal of Gollum in the original trilogy, who will both act in and direct this film. Director Peter Jackson, alongside his longstanding collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, are extensively engaged in the development of the project.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, they will supervise the script development, with Boyens and Walsh assuming responsibility for the screenplay. The trio expressed their excitement, emphasizing their commitment to J.R.R. Tolkien’s intricate mythology and their pride in embarking on another grand adventure. Serkis echoed their sentiments, eagerly anticipating the reunion with Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens, alongside Warner Bros. and the entire filmmaking team. Their involvement assures a promising return to Middle-earth.

CEO David Zaslav underlined the significant opportunity these new films offer Warner Bros.’ theatrical business, acknowledging the enduring popularity and success of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ franchise. With the original trilogy slated for a remastered and extended re-release this summer, anticipation for the new films is palpable.

The announcement coincides with Amazon’s ambitious plans for a ‘Lord of the Rings’ television series, potentially leading to a competitive landscape. Nevertheless, the participation of Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens in the film franchise is likely to reassure loyal fans worried about the direction of the new adaptations.

As preparations for the new saga progress, fans eagerly await further details and glimpses into the enchanting world of Middle-earth.
