‘Civil War’ Star Wagner Moura To Star In ‘The Secret Agent’

Kleber Mendonça Filho, the celebrated Brazilian filmmaker known for ‘Bacurau,’ is slated to helm ‘The Secret Agent,’ an enthralling political thriller featuring ‘Civil War’ star Wagner Moura.

Variety disclosed that the movie aims to immerse viewers in the turbulent setting of 1970s Brazil, portraying the closing era of the nation’s military dictatorship. ‘The Secret Agent’ will be showcased to potential buyers at the Cannes Film Market by MK2 Films, recognized for its contribution to the Oscar-winning ‘Anatomy of a Fall.’

In the pre-production phase, the movie is a joint effort between Brazil’s Cinemascopio and MK Productions, known for their acclaimed works such as Joachim Trier’s ‘The Worst Person in the World’ and Pawel Pawlikowski’s ‘Cold War.’ According to Variety, Wagner Moura, famous for his portrayal of Pablo Escobar in Netflix’s ‘Narcos,’ will portray Marcelo, a university professor in his 40s, navigating the treacherous terrain of political turmoil.

Teaming up with Maria Fernanda Candido, Moura’s character navigates a perilous and intriguing journey, seeking refuge in Recife during Carnival week. ‘The Secret Agent’ holds significant importance for Mendonca Filho, reflecting his passion and dedication through extensive research and personal archives, crafting a narrative deeply rooted in Brazil’s history. Set in his hometown of Recife, the film vows to merge political tension with cultural vibrancy, integrating Carnival celebrations and urban folklore.

With its intricate historical setting and Mendonca Filho’s distinct storytelling approach, ‘The Secret Agent’ is positioned to enthrall global audiences. Set for release in 2025, the film stands as the filmmaker’s most ambitious endeavor yet, marking his return to narrative filmmaking since the Cannes-acclaimed ‘Bacurau.’ As excitement mounts for ‘The Secret Agent,’ viewers can anticipate a compelling examination of Brazil’s political realm, interwoven with folklore and an authentic Brazilian soundtrack.
