SC orders immediate relief for Manipur violence victims

The Supreme Court of India directed the Central and Manipur governments today to ensure immediate distribution of essential supplies like food and medicines to those affected by the ongoing violence in Manipur. The directive comes as the state grapples with three months of inter-community conflict between the Meiteis and the Kukis.
The bench, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala, stated that while the removal of road blockades falls under law enforcement jurisdiction, the governments must consider humanitarian alternatives, such as air-dropping supplies.
Senior Advocate Meenakshi Arora informed the court about two pressing issues: blockades in the Moreh region preventing basic rations and outbreaks of chickenpox and measles in relief camps. In response, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta revealed that nodal officers have been appointed to handle these crises.
The court also directed the government to address the issue of unclaimed bodies in morgues, emphasising that they must be dealt with in a dignified manner to prevent the spread of diseases.
The apex court has scheduled the next hearing for September 6, asking the Central and Manipur governments to report on measures taken. The case stems from the violent clashes that began on May 3, following a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM). The prolonged unrest led to the Central government deploying paramilitary forces to restore stability.
