Kolkata police have arrested Nine individuals following violent protests at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The unrest erupted early Thursday morning in response to the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the facility.

The protests turned destructive when some participants stormed the hospital, resulting in significant damage. Vehicles were vandalized, and public property was destroyed. Police intervened with lathi charge and tear gas to control the situation.

The arrests follow extensive damage and disruption at the hospital, with authorities working to address the immediate aftermath and investigate the circumstances surrounding the violence.

The copy said nearly 40 people, allegedly disguised as protesters, entered the hospital and began vandalising property.  They also hurled stones at police after officials fired teargas to disperse the mob.

On Thursday, a final-year MBBS student from Kolkata Anupam Roy accused the mob of deliberately vandalising the area and sought the support of the public for extending support to ensure a secure environment for doctors.

” Yesterday we were having a peaceful protest, we had planned to arrange a rally of female nurses, doctors, and students. A huge mob came when we were getting ready to start the rally. We requested them to continue their rally and not try to interfere here as there are female protestors. Then the mob tried to get into our protest, shockingly there used to be a lot of police when protests used to happen but when the mob arrived, there were only a few police personnel present at the spot.’ the final year MBBS student said.

On Wednesday night, a mob entered the RG Kar Hospital campus and vandalized the protesting site, vehicles, and public property, forcing security officials to disperse the mob.
