Kiwis boost semis chance with routine win over Scotland

New Zealand defeated Scotland by 16 runs in their Group 2 Super 12 fixture in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup here at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

The Blackcaps racked up an impressive 172/5 first up on the back of Martin Guptill’s power-packed 93. And in reply, Scotland never looked like chasing it down, finishing on 156/5, still 16 runs short. Chasing 173, Scotland lost their openers but ensured they didn’t fall well behind as they reached 76/2 at the halfway point of their chase.

Matt Cross struck five fours in a row off Adam Milne to ease some pressure on Scotland. Tim Southee then removed Matthew Cross in the 11th over.

Calum MacLeod and Richie Berrington went back to the dressing room in 15th and 16th over respectively as Scotland slumped to 106/5. In the end, Scotland fell short 16 runs short of the target.

Earlier batting first, Martin Guptill struck seven sixes in an astonishing 93 off 56 balls to lift New Zealand to 172/5 against Scotland.

Meanwhile, Scotland wicket-keeper Matthew Cross was caught on the stump-mic, reminding his fellow teammate and bowler Chris Greaves that entire India is backing him during the match against New Zealand . Cross’ statement came in connection with team India’s chances to qualify into the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2021 if Scotland would have won against New Zealand.

He was caught on the stump-mic, saying, “Whole India is behind you,” to Greaves. Scotland needed to defeat the Kiwis, for India to qualify

Brief Scores: New Zealand 172/5 (Martin Guptill 93, Glenn Phillips 33*; Safyaan Sharif 2-28, Brad Wheal 2-40) vs Scotland 156/5 (Michael Leask 42*, Matthew Cross 27; Trent Boult 2-29, Ish Sodhi 2-42)

In a high-scoring and exciting match, Chennai beat Bangalore 10-8, with Chennai’s Dhruvpal Godara emerging as the highest goal scorer of the match. Chennai players Sameer Mecca and CPO Altaf ably assisted Dhruvpal in the fast-paced match.

The game was very well attended, and the fast-paced arena format of polo was appreciated by the spectators. Bangalore police commissioner Pratap Reddy was also spotted enjoying the game. It was a well-fought contest with Basheer Ali of Bangalore trying his best to get his team to win, but Chennai proved to be consistent throughout the game, ending up triumphant.

Captain Raumik and Dfr Ram Singh were the other players for the Bangalore side. Aficionados of polo are now looking forward to more such arena polo matches at the India Arena Polo League, which takes place later this year.

The Bangalore polo season is currently underway, with action set to shift to Jaipur soon. The game of polo, which originated in India, is fast gaining traction and popularity across the country. As was evident in Bangalore, sponsors seem to be lining up to support the game, and viewers too are flocking to watch the action live and learn more about the game.

Polo was one of the few sports which did not see its seasons disrupted much over the last couple of years in India. Our players too have honed their skills and are regularly seen playing in foreign countries in the summer months when the weather does not permit play in India.

In fact, the Indian team is also gearing up to play in the Polo World Cup next month. Here’s wishing them the best in their efforts to bring the cup back to India.

Suraj’s gold medal win is special, achieved this feat after 32 years

His father worked as a school watchman and his mother used to provide water to the students. The role of a father continued even throughout the COVID epidemic. But his true wish is to see his son, Suraj Vashisht, become a great man, and Suraj recently took the first step in that direction by taking home the gold in the World Cadet Wrestling competition.

Suraj won the gold in the Greco-Roman wrestling style, but before this, India had never won gold in this competition in the last 32 years. An Indian wrestler, Pappu Yadav, achieved this feat 32 years ago.

Suraj defeated the Japanese wrestler with a score of 5-1 and the Uzbekistan wrestler with a score of 7-4 in the competition. He then proved his talent by defeating the Azerbaijani wrestler in the semi-finals by technical superiority and then in the final by defeating the Russian wrestler 9-0.

Suraj lives in a village named Rithal in the Rohtak district of Haryana and is doing his class X studies at an open institution. He lives in Guru Meher Singh Akhada, about 25 km away from his residence. This is his workplace where he practices wrestling every morning and every night.

Suraj says that he has been practicing in this arena for the last six years, and he got a chance to participate in Asian Cadet Wrestling for the first time in Kyrgyzstan. But he lost the match against an Uzbek wrestler and could not win any medals.

At that time, the coach of the Akhada, Ranbir Singh Dhaka, took the responsibility of a psychologist very well and advised Suraj not to get discouraged and to continue preparing for future competitions.

Suraj claims that, in addition to Ranbir Sir, the coaches at the national camp, Shamsher, Indrajit, and Rajveer, guided him through his mistakes and taught him how to avoid repeating them in the future.

Suraj learned from his mistakes and won gold at World Cadet Wrestling this time. Suraj says that his wish is to remain at his best and to become the world champion in the senior category in the future.

Suraj’s discipline, according to coach Ranbir Singh Dhaka, is the secret to his success. He belongs to a very poor family, and they have a desire to reach the top. Sandeep, Kuldeep, and Jasvir, the senior wrestlers of the Akhada, help Suraj by providing a healthy diet.

His family is suffering through a period of acute financial trouble. According to Ranbir Singh, if a healthy diet is set up for this wrestler, he has the ability to become a successful wrestler in the future.

Emma Raducanu defeats Serena Williams

Emma Raducanu started her Western & Southern Open campaign on a high note on Tuesday as she outlasted American legend Serena Williams in a highly anticipated opening-round match.

19-year-old Raducanu was dominating from the start of the match, breaking Williams in the opening game before rolling to a 6-4, 6-0 victory. The 23-time major champion Williams, who announced her retirement from tennis after the US Open, was competing in only her fourth match of the season.

The 40-year-old struggled to find her rhythm. Raducanu, 19, played clean tennis throughout the match. Raducanu shot just one unforced error while Williams misfired on 12 unforced errors to go with 11 winners.

With a set-in hand, the Brit raced away in the second set to collect her 12th win of the season, hitting zero unforced errors to clinch the match. She will face former No.1 Victoria Azarenka in the second round.

“I think we all need to just honor Serena and her amazing career. I’m so grateful for the experience of being able to play against her and for our careers to cross over.
