iTV Network founder Kartikeya Sharma filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections from Haryana on Tuesday. Haryana will return two members to the Upper House of Parliament on June 10. Elections to 57 Rajya Sabha seats are scheduled for that day. Sharma’s nomination as an independent candidate was supported by the Dushyant Chautala-led Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) and independent MLAs.

In the 90-member assembly, the BJP has 40 MLAs and the Congress 31. With 10 MLAs, JJP is the third largest party in Haryana, while the Independent MLAs number 7. HLP and INLD have one MLA each in the Assembly. JJP leader Ajay Singh Chautala told the media that all 10 MLAs of his party would support Sharma. “We are confident that he will garner the required votes to win,” Chautala said.

Sharma is pitted against senior Congress leader Ajay Maken, a former Union Minister. The BJP has fielded Krishan Lal Panwar, a five-time legislator from Haryana. Sharma comes from a family of politicians. He is the son of former Union Minister Venod Sharma and current Ambala Mayor, Shakti Rani Sharma. He is married to academic and author, Dr Aishwarya Sharma, who is the daughter of former Haryana Speaker, Kuldeep Sharma.

Speaking to The Daily Guardian Review, Sharma expressed his confidence that he would get the required number of votes. “I have the support of the weaker sections and the JJP. But since I am an independent candidate, I would try to have the support of all sections,” he said.

While speaking on his son’s political debut, Venod Sharma, the president of Haryana JanChetna Party, said that “Kartikeya has taken a conscious decision to enter politics and I am extremely hopeful that he would shine here too. He is here to serve poor and society as a whole. On the other hand, the Congress candidate is an outsider in Haryana and does not have enough understanding of the need of the people in the state.”

With Sharma, a dynamic and visionary young leader, entering the poll fray, the contest has become interesting.
